Make a skin/mod.

Hello! I'm new here... I've been looking around here a little while now and I became very interested in making skins and mods... and I wounder; is it hard to make a skin/mod for a truck or something else? What softwares should I use? Can these softwares be used with a Mac?

Making complete trucks/trailers from a little block to an complete model is very difficult
Making skins is a lot easier, we have some tutorials, but they are in Dutch, is that a problem?

Thank you for the answer I think I should start with making skins then... I'm pretty sure I can use google translate so I can understand the tutorials, so that is hopefully no problem.
